Stylistic study of satirical texts in Persian education textbooks
Seyyed Musa Hosseini , Torab Jangi Ghahraman (Author in Charge), Ahmad Khyali Khatibi
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Humor functions as a complex stylistic device within Persian literature, serving not only to engage the reader but also to facilitate conceptual acquisition in educational settings. Given that Persian textbooks are primary repositories of literary instruction, a rigorous stylistic analysis is imperative to elucidate the linguistic and discursive mechanics of humor within these texts. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the stylistic features of humor in Persian textbooks to determine its functional efficiency in educational discourse.
METHODOLOGY: The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, grounded in a five-layer stylistic framework: phonological, lexical, discourse, semantic, and situational. To analyze the pragmatic function of humor, this research employs the classic theories of *superiority*, *relief*, and *incongruity*. The corpus comprises humorous texts extracted from various grade-level textbooks, categorized by their provenance (original, rewritten, and adapted) to evaluate stylistic variation and consistency across different curricula.
FINDINGS: The analysis reveals that humor within Persian educational materials is predominantly instantiated at the lexical and situational levels, with a discernible dearth of integration within the deeper semantic and discourse strata. Furthermore, a comparative assessment across grade levels indicates a lack of systematic stylistic coherence or curricular planning in the strategic deployment of humor.
CONCLUSION: While humor possesses significant potential for enhancing educational efficacy and engagement, its current application in Persian textbooks lacks a cohesive structural rationale. These findings underscore the need for a more deliberate, framework-driven approach to the selection and integration of humorous texts in future textbook revisions.
